Dear Friends,

As the school year ends around the world, Friends by Nature is just beginning its summer programming. The summer can be the hardest time for youth when school is out and activities for junior high and high school students barely exist. Friends by Nature fills this gap by providing youth programming for the community in the form of leadership courses and short summer camps. As Ethiopian Israeli youth continue to struggle with a higher delinquency rate than their non-Ethiopian counterparts, we at Friends by Nature are pleased to report that in the towns where we work, issues of delinquency and problems with the law continue to stay low as we focus on building local leadership and bringing about change in the community. On behalf of our organization and our communities around Israel, we thank you for your continued support in helping us make a difference.

Filling the Gap

Friends by Nature is gearing up to send its young high school leaders to a weeklong summer leadership course. At this course, they will delve into topics of leadership development and youth programming as well as learn how to effectively and successfully become a Friends by Nature youth counselor. This course is a great opportunity for our teenagers as they have the chance to not only develop leadership skills, but also spend time with their peers in an intensive, exploratory atmosphere.

While the high school students are preparing to be young leaders, elementary-aged children in Gedera will be enjoying a summer camp hosted by American volunteers from one of our partnering organizations, Yahel Israel Service Learning. This weeklong English learning experience will be filled with fun, hands-on games that build group identity as well as provide a positive introduction to Friends by Nature Youth Programming. We are looking forward to launching this new project in the coming weeks.

Room To Grow
We are thrilled to announce the grand opening of the Gedera community garden that took place on June 27th. With the participation of hundreds of community residents and the head of the Gedera Local Council, the event was a great success. The community garden covers one acre, which the local council has made available to Friends by Nature for residents to grow plots of organic vegetables and fruits.

At the event, festive activities were made available for children and youth, as the hip-hop group made up of Gedera teens from FBN’s music club performed their most popular songs. The garden augments the work of FBN’s community gardening program, working with hundreds of individuals in five residential units in Gedera and two residential units in Rishon L’Zion. The gardening program helps residents take responsibility for their environment, developing local leadership and building safe and supportive neighborhoods. The community garden will serve as a place to bridge neighborhoods, learn from one another and work together to grow wholesome, healthy foods.

Friends by Nature co-founder Yuvi Tashome was given the special privilege at Israel’s 63rd independence day celebration of lighting one of the twelve beacons representing the 12 tribes of Israel. Yuvi was honored this year under the ceremony’s official theme of “Looking after one another – mutual responsibility.” It was an emotional ceremony and Yuvi spoke beautifully to a crowd of a few thousand attendees.

Relationships Across Borders

[Friends by Nature & Camp Tawonga]

At the end of July, three teenagers from Gedera’s Shapira neighborhood will head to Camp Tawonga in San Francisco, CA. With generous grants provided by the San Franciso Jewish Federation, these youth will have the opportunity to attend an American Jewish summer camp with kids from around the United States. The cross-cultural relationships that are formed in experiences such as this are invaluable, with teenagers from both places having the chance to learn a great deal from one another. Every year, Zahi Azaria, National Head of Youth Center Activities for Friends by Nature, accompanies the participants to camp for guidance, support and the true experience of a lifetime.

To make our relationship with Camp Tawonga a more unique and rounded exchange, we are working together with Yahel to run a two-week Jewish service-learning trip in Israel for teens from Camp Tawonga. For the first week of the trip, the teens from both Gedera and the U.S. will volunteer and travel together in Israel. The goal is to provide a more in-depth trip to Israel, a trip where the teenagers can engage with Israel’s periphery communities and learn from one another through substantial cultural exchange.

Find out more about the trip here.

This year has brought many changes for Friends by Nature. The organization has grown, spreading to new communities and building new partnerships with Israeli and American organizations. This year, one of the most note-worthy is our partnership with Yahel Israel Service Learning, a program that allowed nine American young adults moved to Gedera to volunteer with Friends by Nature. Over the past eight months, Friends by Nature and Yahel have created a successful and fruitful collaboration. The participants of the Yahel Social Change Program have taken active leadership roles in all of Friends by Nature’s existing programs – helping to create a much broader and more diverse sense of community.

With the support of FBN, the Yahel participants have also taken on personal projects in the Shapira neighborhood. This year, they created a program called “Open Space.” Twice a week, the youth center is converted into a youth lounge where high school students come to relax, be with friends, listen to music and spend quality time together. “Open Space” was created with the goal of providing a consistent space for the teenagers – a safe place off the street. Check out this impressive video, highlighting the success of the “Open Space” program!

The Yahel program is accepting applications for its Fall 2011 session. To find out more about the program, or to apply, click here.

We are pleased to have been awarded recognition and a special grant from the Israel National Insurance Institute (Bituach Leumi) in order to implement an innovative program focusing on early education toward employment. The program will work with 15-, 16- and 17-year olds over a three-year period, providing orientation to employment, a view of employment opportunities and helping with the transition from childhood to adulthood. We will need to raise matching funds of $36,000 a year for this program. These teenagers have a long road in front of them with the army and higher education, but we are looking to help them aim high and reach for their dreams….
As Tu B’shvat marks the beginning of Spring, we must mention our community gardening program, which has gained momentum as we work with community residents in Gedera and Rishon L’Zion on building local responsibility and turning neglected apartment units into better places to live. Additionally, the Gedera Garin has broke ground on the development of a new greenhouse, located right around the corner from the Shapira neighborhood. The work is long and hard, but the Garin framework is providing the network to make it happen.
The year 2010 saw many Ethiopian young adults and kids alike working hard on becoming successful members of Israeli society. While some are studying diligently to finish their first and second degrees, others are pushing their way through their army service. Through it all, we see them returning to their home communities and becoming role models for their peers, as well as successful sons and daughters to their proud parents.
We are happy to report that Friends by Nature is growing and continuing to strengthen the Ethiopian Jewish community from within and as always we thank you for your continued support and concern for making Israel the home for all of its citizens.

Down on the farm

In December, children and families of the Wajjed and “Homework at Home” programs of Friends by Nature’s Gedera Community Garin took a day-trip to a farm near Beit Shemesh. The participants had the opportunity to experience and learn about issues of sustainability, traditional farm life, agricultural and traditional nutrition. This fun and educational trip was a special chance for the children to learn about these issues through their parents’ knowledge and experience. The parents and children took part in activities such as a walking tour of the farm, goat herding and milking, and cooking traditional Ethiopian food over a fire with farm-produced products. All of the participants had a great time and learned a lot from one another. Click here to view a short video slide show of the trip!

From N. America to Gedera…

…social change is in the works!

In September 2010, Friends by Nature was joined by the Yahel Service Learning Program. Six post-university N. American young adults have put new life into the Gedera Garin community. Working side by side in Friends by Nature’s community programs, they are helping in every way, including teaching English, developing “Open Space” youth center program and preparing Ethiopian young adults to work at American summer camps. In addition, the young adults from both N. America and Israel have taken special weekend trips together, exploring Israel from both the Ethiopian and American points of view. Click here to learn more about this fruitful and successful collaboration.

Summer fun in the sun

This past summer, four Ethiopian youth from the Gedera Garin had the chance to travel to the United States for an American Jewish summer camp experience at Camp Tawonga in San Francisco. In addition, 12 children from Friends by Nature’s Garinim attended Camp Kimama, a bi-lingual American and Israeli summer camp located in the Machmoret on the Mediterranean, north of Tel Aviv. Support for this program came from the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco.

Three Gedera teens who attended Camp Tawonga were recently asked about their experiences. All three teens—Shai, Dalia, and Rachel—reported very enthusiastic and positive responses.

Why did you want to go to camp?
Shai: I wanted to spend time with Americans, to meet other kids and to encounter a different culture. I wanted to make friends from another place. That’s the coolest thing – I can tell my American friends what’s happening here and they can tell me what’s happening there.
Dalia: I like new things and I wanted to have this type of experience. My sister went a couple years ago and she told me that it was a huge experience, an experience I would never forget. I also wanted to improve my English.
What was it like with the American kids?
Shai: Before I went, I was nervous. I was scared that maybe they wouldn’t like me. But I was completely mistaken. The minute I arrived, we were friends. Also, in the beginning it was a little hard for me with my English, but by the time I left, I understood almost everything.
Rachel: The American girls were different but they were sweet and nice. They come from a different culture, but it was really fun to get to know them. They’re very social and friendly.
Dalia: I think American girls have a lot more confidence—everything with them is a lot more open, a lot more free.
Do you think that camp changed you?
Dalia: I’m more confident now. I’m also more self-confident in my English.
Shai: Yes. It was weird to come back. I felt like I was different there. It was weird to adjust from their culture…coming back felt weird.
Would you recommend this experience to other kids?
Rachel: Absolutely. I wish I could do it again.
Dalia: Of course. This is a once in a lifetime experience. It’s a huge loss if people don’t go. This opportunity won’t come again.
Shai: Yes, definitely. Everyone should go. I’m trying to go back. I want to return to US. I want to see some of my friends from camp.
